Due to the enthusiasm of one of their teachers, Mr. Juan Herrera, hydroponics is a new activity at the EAS. Sponsored by Pan-American Energy, a oil company working off shore in the zone, and the technological advice from this author, the original idea is fructifying.
In order to produce hydroponics tomato, a greenhouse was build there. On December 21, 2004, it was full with the first crop of hydroponics tomato at the school.
Recirculating nutritious solution dripping into bags filled with substrate it was the system selected to be used there.
Having 2 to 5 mm diameter grave near to the location, as it can be seen in the picture, this was the substrate used to fill the bags. It was a inert substrate with minimum cost.
Besides, a bigger size grave was used on the floor previously covered with thick polyethylene film in order to avoid the grow of weeds. Two plants were inserted in each bag, each one in front of two walking ways inside the greenhouse.
Recirculation of nutrient solution was obtained by tubing below the bags. Having holes in each bag, drainage of them was conducted to the tilted tubes.
Of course, from now on it is a long way to go, but the initial success obtained there is showing the factibility of this project. To go ahead in soilless culture under glass is a need for people at such austral province in order to have fresh vegetables of excellent quality required by them.
